~ History ~

There's a bit of a download time for the following photos
but it's worth the wait so please be patient :)

In the early 1920s Henry Harvey, who had a farm in Wayside, transported sick and injured people to the local hospital in the back of his farm wagon, that was lined with hay. During that decade, Henry Harvey was instrumental in gathering some of his friends in Ocean Township and organizing the original Oakhurst First-Aid Squad. Hence, the Oakhurst First-Aid Squad was officially organized in 1928.

We greatfully acknowledge with pride, the heritage our Charter Members have
contributed to this Organization.

Charter Members

The charter members of the Squad were: Walter P. Brown, Thomas Comber, William W. Dennis, Henry Harvey, Nicholas Harvey, Leon Herbert, Robert Throckmorton, Elston Ireland, Philip Kolb, Wallace Lachenauer, Raymond Miller, Irving Sickles, James R. Hibbets and Edgar Wells Jr.

early squad

Our oldest living member is Clifford Bowne, age 94. Also among our distinguished older members is Oliver Herbert Jr. who is 78 years old.

The Hindenburg disaster, Lakewood, NJ

Members of the Squad answered a request for assistance at the Hindenburg disaster in Lakehurst, New Jersey when the German airship, the largest aircraft ever to fly, was destroyed in a tragic fire on May 6, 1937.

The Wreck of the Morro Castle at Asbury Park, NJ

Our predecessors also helped with the injured when the Morro Castle, an ocean going passenger ship, caught fire off the coast of Asbury Park and drifted to the beach just north of Convention Hall in that City. The photo shows the Morro Castle on September 8th 1934.

The Woodbridge Train Wreck

We also responded to the call for help at the Woodbridge Train Wreck when a trestle collapsed in Woodbridge, New Jersey in 1951.
